EACH Poster Competition ~ Marlborough's Runner-Up Prize Winner!

Congratulations to Jamieson T, in Grade 6, who has been announced a runner-up in the EACH Community Health Poster Competition. We are so very proud of you Jamieson!

Students were invited to design an Indigenous inspired poster that conveyed at least one key message to slow the spread of Covid-19. Every single poster submitted will be published and showcased as a collection in a picture book.

Marlborough will be receiving a copy of this book once it is published.

Well done to all Marlborough students who entered this competition and another big round of applause to you Jamieson!

Spreading some positivity throughout our community during lockdown 2.0

It has brought me so much joy to see the latest submissions from students and their families who have been getting involved in lifting the spirits of our local communities and creating some Street Art to bring a smile to neighbour’s faces when they are out exercising during lockdown.

There have been several wonderful community art movements during our lockdowns, such as the teddy bear hunts, colourful rainbows in windows, positive messages written in chalk on the footpaths just to name a few.

Spoonville is another world-wide phenomenon that lots of communities have been getting involved in. Children decorate wooden spoons and start their own spoon village or add them to an existing one in a location people can see on their daily walks.

Spoonville started in Winnersh, England as a way of improving children’s mental health during COVID-19 lockdowns. It is now a worldwide phenomenon with many Spoonville Villages popping up in suburbs of Melbourne. They even have their own Facebook page.

Here are some of the submissions I've had this week. I am sure they will bring a smile to your face as well!

Remote Learning 2.0 ~ Word Sculptures

I have been blown away by the creativity of you all again this week! Your task was to spell out a word, using that word, to make a 2D or 3D sculpture.

Art Room: 2020

Welcome back to another year of creativity in the Art Room.

Students are busy working on a range of techniques and processes this term.

Our new Foundation students are settling well into the routines of visiting the Art Room and spending their lessons experimenting with a variety of mark making techniques. Watercolour paints have been the highlight so far!

Grades 1/2 have spent some time viewing the illustrations of Philip Bunting, particularly enjoying his book 'Koalas eat Gumleaves'. They have created some amazing illustrations of koalas themselves. We are currently learning about the artist Henri Matisse.

Grades 3/4 also created some drawings of koalas this term, as well as sculpting some fibre animals, inspired by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers.

Our Grades 5/6 classes have been creating the most amazing Australian Bird collages this term. We spent time making textured, painted papers to match images of birds that students selected. They then used these painted papers to create a collage of their chosen bird.

Clay - a favourite medium in the Art Room!

Term 3 has seen all grades experience the techniques and procedures of modelling with clay.

The Terracotta Warriors currently on display at the NGV Exhibition were a big inspiration for all students. We learned all about the Terracotta Army from China and experimented modelling techniques using both plasticine, terracotta clay and air dry clay.

Students are now familiar with the following terms when working with clay - slab, pinch pot, sphere, coil, slip and score, smooth, stick, kiln, fire, air dry, as well as a variety of tools to use while modelling with clay - skewers, toothpicks, wire, toothbrushes, textured materials and surfaces, stamps, sculpting instruments etc,

P/1 students created textured bird wall hangings, embellishing them with beads and feathers.

Grade 2/3 students started their models with a pinch pot and then let their creativity shine - turning their pots on the side or upside down to create all sorts of weird and wonderful aliens/monsters and mythical creatures!

The students in Grades 4/5 also started their models beginning with a pinch pot. They then turned these into 'Crazy Birds' and once painted and dried, embellished them with beads, chenille sticks and feathers.

Grade 6 students drew inspiration from pop artist Wayne Thiebaud and created these yummy cupcakes, also beginning their models with a pinch pot, then adding a coil as a lid.

Busy artists

We have been busy little artists in the Art Room - painting, sewing, modelling, drawing and constructing.

Last term. the Grade 4/5s used fabric paints to design their own bag, drawing inspiration from the painted fabrics of Mirka Mora. They also used fabric scraps to model a bowl.

Grade 6s also drew inspiration from Mirka Mora's painted dolls, as well as Laura Blythman and Pete Cromer's modern fabrics, to design, paint, assemble and stitch their own softies.

Grade 2/3 students explored the Colour Wheel and how to mix Primary Colours to create Secondary Colours. Their giraffes below were all painted with only the three primary colours on their palettes - red, yellow and blue. We also finished off our Koinobori (Japanese fish kites).

F/1 students spent time learning about the Primary Colours and how to mix them to make Secondary Colours. We have spent many lessons experimenting with different mediums and techniques.

At the moment, we are busy working with clay - modelling, sculpting, painting, glossing and decorating. A favourite lesson was modelling Terracotta Warriors out of plasticine. Students also enjoyed experimenting with terracotta clay and practising making slabs, coils and pinch pots.
