3/4 ~ Puppet Making

The 3/4 students have been busy modelling, constructing and sewing hand puppets this term. What a great topic to be studying in class! We have further developed so many of our Art skills and techniques over the past few weeks and had a lot of fun in the process.

Students started out with the neck of a plastic bottle and used this, along with newspaper, tape, cardboard and foil to form the head of their puppet.

We then used coloured tissue paper and diluted PVA glue to cover the head of our puppets.

We cut out a pattern/template from felt/material for the puppet's body and then hand sewed the edges.

The neck of the head was then glued to the body using a hot-glue gun and we added finishing touches to each of our puppets. Aren't they terrific! What a wonderful job you have done Grade 3/4!

P-2 ~ Paper Weaving

"Over and under, over and under" - you will have heard us chanting in the Art Room lately!! We've been fine-tuning our fine motor skills and getting ready for our unit of work on Threads and Textiles. "In and out, up and down..."

Yes! We've been weaving! The students have been so keen to learn all about woven objects in the world around us (baskets, clothing, rugs, nests, placemats etc). They were fascinated when watching a video of a man weaving a basket out of blades of long grass.

So we had a go at weaving ourselves and used lovely coloured strips of paper to create all sorts of bright and patterned artworks. Well done P-2 students - you are ready to move on to sewing now!

Grade 5/6 ~ Sock Monsters

This term, the Grade 5/6 students have been studying a unit of work on Threads and Textiles. In particular, we have explored the wonderful world of Sock Monsters! We drew most of our inspiration from the handiwork of John Murphy and his book called 'Stupid Sock Creatures'.

Thank you to all the students and families for bringing in their odd, cast-off and unwanted socks so we were able to complete this project. Our sewing skills were certainly put to the test and all the students were very patient when it came to threading needles and de-tangling thread!!

We cut our socks according to how many ears/horns/legs we wanted our monster to have, formed a mouth with the heel of the sock (and sewed into place) and added buttons for eyes as well as felt and an assortment of other materials for other details (arms, tails, legs, moustaches, hair etc).  As you will see, each monster has his/her own unique characteristics and personality (and of course a name)!

I will continue to post photos of the Sock Monsters as the students finish them off, but in the meantime, here are some of the crazy little critters already completed.

P-2 ~ Robots

During Term 3, the P-2 students have been investigating Toys. To complement their learning in the classroom, we have also been discussing and exploring the topic of Toys in the Art Room.


We have made some cute little peg dolls and finger puppets, as well as developing our drawing and painting skills by exploring Robots and all their interesting features.


We came up with a very long list of features (buttons, knobs, gauges, antennae, screws, panels etc) and how each might look. Using a mix and match approach, the students all designed their own robot with varying features.


We used black oil pastels to draw our robots and then painted them with poster paints.

How amazing do they look?! What fantastic features you all came up with and they all look so different! Check them out....
