Grade 3/4 ~ Thought Bubbles
The Grade 3/4 students began the year in the Art room by creating a mixed media collage. They combined a digital photo of themselves with a variety of lines and patterns to resemble a thought bubble about themselves.
Students were encouraged to illustrate the things they enjoyed doing or were good at and to outline their work with fineliner and add colour. They look terrific! (I have blurred out faces in the interests of privacy).

Gr 5/6 ~ Personality Pinwheels
The Grade 5/6 students have started the year off by creating some 'Personality Pinwheels'. These are a great way for students to get to know each other and look fantastic once completed!
We started by drawing some simple pinwheel lines on a square piece of paper. In the first space, students wrote their first name.
Students then talked with one another about words that would describe them, their personalities and the things they like/enjoy. In every second space, students then wrote these words. To fill up the remaining spaces, we added a variety of lines and patterns.
The students were encouraged to use analogous colours when colouring their artworks. Analogous colours are colours that are found next to each other on the colour wheel - they usually match well and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
Here are some of the completed artworks - they look so eye catching on display in the Art room!

Foundation students ~ very first Art lessons at Marlborough!
Welcome to all our new Foundation students! I have been enjoying getting to know you all and hope you have enjoyed your first Art lessons at Marlborough.
During our first lesson, we practised putting our Art smocks on and had a tour of the Art room so we could see where everything was kept. We are so lucky to have such a big room for Art. Then we read one of my favourite stories, called 'The Dot' by Peter Reynolds.
Most students at Marlborough are familiar with this book and when they see it on my table, always ask if we can read it again! It's a wonderful story about a young girl who thinks she can't draw and Peter Reynolds reminds us all, through his wonderful story, to not be afraid of expressing ourselves and to just 'make a mark and see where it takes you.'
Well, the Foundation students certainly made their mark during our first lesson and created some very colourful dots of their own, using crayons and poster paints. I have taken photos of each students during their first lesson and will be sending them home shortly.
For our second lesson in Art, we talked all about the element of LINE and how we can create many different types of line in our artwork. We even gave the lines some names of their own and practised drawing them in the air!
Students then set to work on creating their own 'Magic Carpet', using a variety of different lines and patterns.
We drew our lines in black oil pastels and then 'magically' painted over them with poster paints.
"Wow! I can't believe that my lines still stay there when I paint over them!" I heard one student exclaim. A great opportunity for me to then talk about how the oil pastels 'resist' the water paints <insert lots of "oohs" and "ahhs" here from the students>...
To finish off our 'Magic Carpets', we tied on some wool to the corners (thanks to Lachie, Grace and Tracey for your help with this!). Don't they look fabulous! Well done Foundation students!

Welcome back to the Art Room for 2015! I hope you all enjoyed your summer break. We have lots of creative projects to look forward to again this year in Art. I am really excited about the decorations we will be making for our School Fair, which is coming up in a few weeks.
We have spent some time in our first few Art lessons getting re-acquainted with each other and making some new friends. There has been lots of talking at the tables while students create their artwork (always encouraged!) and it is lovely to hear them asking each other questions and encouraging one another while they work.
Grade 1/2 students have been working on some self-portraits. We talked about the element of SPACE and the difference between the background and the foreground.
We created our backgrounds for this project by pasting small squares of tissue paper onto our cardboard. Some students had fun creating patterns with colour, while others preferred to use all the colours in their backgrounds. We talked about overlapping and creating rows and columns.
Students drew their self portraits on a separate piece of paper in pencil first and then traced over them with black textas. We talked about proportion and shape and to not forget about drawing our necks! We had fun acting out what we would look like with no neck!
