CD loom weaving
As part of our Threads and Textiles unit, Grade 5/6 students learned how to do circular weaving using unwanted CDs and DVDs as a loom. They also learned how to create pom poms.
Basket Weaving
To tie in with NAIDOC week and students' integrated topic of the Stolen Generation, we investigated the artwork of the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. We focused mainly on the baskets that these women wove out of natural materials. Sharing the story 'Collecting Colour' by Kylie Dunstan was a great introduction for this activity.

Grade 3/4 ~ Term Two artwork
Straw Weaving
Grade 3/4 students made a loom out of 4 drinking straws and used a variety of wool to weave on the loom. They could then choose to turn their finished weaving into a little creature, or keep it plain and use it as a bookmark. Finger knitting was a very popular early finisher activity this term!
Sidney Nolan and his Ned Kelly artworks
We shared the books 'Meet Ned Kelly' and 'Meet Sidney Nolan' during Art lessons and students then had a go at painting their own version of Nolan's Ned Kelly artwork. We talked about his use of colour, space and emphasis. Students used acrylic paints for their landscapes, while the shape of Ned Kelly was modelled using black magiclay.

Grade 1/2 ~ Projects from Term Two
Mixed-Media Owls
Bodies woven from paper strips, heads drawn and coloured with oil pastels, wings created with textured and painted papers torn into collage pieces...... aren't they just gorgeous?!
Weaving with threads and sewing beads and buttons on hessian
So many new skills to practice and master...... threading the needles, tying knots, sewing up and down through the cloth, pulling out threads to create a fringe, fastening on buttons, sewing on beads, cutting threads, stitching lines. The students all worked so confidently during these lessons!
Joseph had a little overcoat
We shared this lovely story and practiced cutting with fabric scissors to make our own little patchwork coats.

Preps ~ Term Two artwork
Woven Quilts
Foundation students used coloured paper strips on a paper loom they created to weave a quilt. We focused on the pattern of over and under. It took lots of practice and patience!
The Owl and the Pussycat
Students enjoyed listening to the nursery rhyme of The Owl and the Pussycat, as well as watching a short animation of the rhyme. They were then inspired to make their own mixed-media collage of the Owl and Pussycat sailing in their pea-green boat.
Foundation students were amazing at using fabric scissors to cut up a variety of green coloured fabrics to collage onto their boats. They also used black markers to draw their owls and cats and made their background with oil pastels and watercolour paints.

Over and Under, In and Out, Up and Down!!!
Warp, weft, weave, loom, strand, yarn, spool, needle....... lots of new vocabulary being used in the Art Room this term as we undertake a whole school Threads and Textiles unit.
Here's a snippet of what's been happening....
Foundation students have been weaving with strips of paper onto paper looms and experimenting with a wide variety of threads and textiles woven into plastic netting.
Grades 1/2 have been weaving with colourful paper strips to create a body for their mixed media owls.
They are currently exploring the threads in hessian and making fringing, as well as beginning to thread needles and stitch lines.
Grades 3/4 have been weaving on straw looms, crafting some interestingly textured bookmarks. They are also getting right into finger knitting.
Grades 5/6 have been recycling old CDs and DVDs and transforming them into looms to weave mandalas, dream catchers, coasters and wall hangings. Pom pom making is also a big hit!
And we have all been enjoying sharing and discussing the following books in Art classes.
More photos of completed student work to come.
