3/4 ~ Marine Life

This term, the 3/4 students have been very busy in the Art room creating a variety of works based around their topic of Marine Life.

As a collaborative project, they worked in small groups to design and make a colourful mosaic. This involved cutting tiles (while wearing protective safety gear of course!), gluing down the tesserae (the cut tiles) and shells on the sketched design, grouting the piece and then sealing the grout.

The final artworks look fantastic and are now on display in the Art Room windows (facing out to the prep playground).

Students also created some marine life block prints using styrofoam printing plates, as well as making some gorgeous jellyfish artworks using paints and chalk pastels. Well done 3/4s!

Whole School Sustainable Artwork ~ Tyre Weaving

Last term, we found some old tyres in the sports room that were headed for the dumpster, so we salvaged them (of course!) and turned them into some works of art to brighten up our chook shed!

All grades contributed to these colourful tyres by weaving pieces of coloured ribbon straw into the loom we created. Although it took a long time, it was quite a calming activity and was really satisfying to turn our junk into art!

And they may just be the inspiration needed for our 'girls' to start laying some more eggs!!

3/4 ~ Puppet Making

The 3/4 students have been busy modelling, constructing and sewing hand puppets this term. What a great topic to be studying in class! We have further developed so many of our Art skills and techniques over the past few weeks and had a lot of fun in the process.

Students started out with the neck of a plastic bottle and used this, along with newspaper, tape, cardboard and foil to form the head of their puppet.

We then used coloured tissue paper and diluted PVA glue to cover the head of our puppets.

We cut out a pattern/template from felt/material for the puppet's body and then hand sewed the edges.

The neck of the head was then glued to the body using a hot-glue gun and we added finishing touches to each of our puppets. Aren't they terrific! What a wonderful job you have done Grade 3/4!

Grade 3/4 ~ More weavings

As promised, here are some more photos of the amazing weavings completed by the Grade 3/4s last term. If you are stopping by the office, make sure you have a look at them all on display outside the staffroom.

And an early finisher managed to whip one of these wall hangings up in a jiffy!! So clever!

Grade 3/4 ~ Weaving

For the past few weeks, the Grade 3/4 classes have been weaving away to make these gorgeous wall hangings - all part of our Threads and Textiles unit of work this term.

We began by stringing our loom (warp) and then practised weaving with a variety of textured and plain wool and string, chanting "over and under" while we created our weft!

Some students have finished their weaving already and have added a branch, beads and pom-poms to complete their wall hangings. I will post more photos next week as students finish their weaving, but in the meantime, have a look at these beauties!

3/4 ~ Slinky lizards

Have you seen all the little creatures climbing the walls in the Art room lately??? 

No, not the kids! These little fellas...

The Grade 3/4s have been making them out of construction paper and all the other grades have been wanting to learn how to make them too! First, we began by decorating a large piece of coloured card with lines and shapes, using textas.

We then folded our paper following some specific instructions and cut along one of the folded lines.

Then we cut small slits right up past the folds to create the 'slinky' backs of the lizards. To finish them off, we cut out some legs and feet as well as making their heads and a long tongue. Some students chose to glue on googly eyes and they were complete! So cute!
